When many car enthusiasts think of a dyno they imagine a large platform, sometimes above, sometimes in ground, with 4 rollers. When it came to choosing the right dyno for our customers, it was a relatively easy choice; but why did we choose a hub dyno?
I do want to start by saying we are thrilled to have our Mainline Prohub 4600 AWD dyno, and is one of the most state of the art pieces of performance equipment in New York! We offer tuning through our in house tuner, Kevin "K Nasty" as well as hosting world renowned tuners such as JR Tuned, Mike Botti, and Bader Built. If you're looking for a tune, or just to rent some dyno time, hit us up!
Safety
Obviously safety is always a top priority for many industries, and with 3000+ Lbs cars pushing wheel speeds over 100 MPH, its a large consideration for us as well. A standard rolling dyno requires you to use multiple ratchet straps to hold the car down. If a strap were to break or come loose, or if the cars steering were to move while on the dyno, it could result in the car falling off the dyno.
Tires are also a big factor in tuning, and if you were to have a tire failure, it could result in damage to the car and injury to the people around it. With a Hub dyno, the car is bolted directly to it; no straps needed and no worries about falling off. The tire consideration is also nullified but we'll get into that more in a moment...
Consistency
To put it simply, dyno's are a tool used to measure the differences in a vehicles power output when making adjustments to the tune. The more consistent and accurate the output from the dyno to the tuner, the better the adjustments and tune can be. If you're getting different numbers every pull or struggling with traction, it can result in a poor tune.
There are a few reasons you may struggle with traction on a rolling dyno; The tires are worn and have low tread, you have slicks or an aggressive compound that needs to be warmed prior to use, or the car is just making a lot of power. With a hub dyno these possible issues are all taken out of the equation.
Other facilities have reported being able to complete pulls on a hub dyno and get readings within 5 hp/tq over 5+ pulls. Better yet, pulling that car on the hub dyno 6 months later and able to get the same numbers. This is all to say that when you get tuned on our dyno and add mods later on for a retune, were able to pick back up right where we left off.
Ease
We talked about strapping the car down earlier, but most of the time you'll have to re tighten straps between pulls which takes time. Lets also talk about if something mechanical has to be adjusted or repaired on the dyno. You'll have to take the straps off, pull the car off, get it to a lift and repeat the process once the repair is complete. With our hub dyno we have a scissor lift that we use to lift the car to the hub adapters. This lift can also be used to access under the car for quick repairs while on the dyno.
All this is to say its easier to set up and make quick repairs or adjustments. In this business time is money and if we can save you both with a hub dyno then we're in a good spot.
